The Kids With Heart Award was established to
acknowledge outstanding young people who may
not otherwise be recognized.

Congratulations to Eileen Salsgiver, The
Pike's 2008 Kids With Heart grand prize

Eileen was selected from eight outstanding nominees
for The Pike's Kids With Heart Award - which
includes a $500 donation to "Eileen's Fund" of
Community Hospital of Long Beach -- and $100
for her to spend at The Pike.
About Eileen: After her Grandfather was
injured in a car accident two years ago, Eileen became
very concerned about how people paid for all the
care that they received in the hospital. She told her
Mother that she wanted to help the people who
could not afford to pay their bills by raising money
for them.
So Eileen started writing Comic Books about "Danger
Dog" and sold them for 50 cents each in the
Community Hospital gift shop. Then she realized that
she would have to make a lot of comic books to
achieve her goal. That was when she decided to
organize an event to raise donations. She invited all her friends and their
mothers
to an afternoon Tea and charged 50 cents admission.
Some of the mothers donated items for a raffle, and
so an annual fund raiser was born. Two have been
held so far and all the proceeds have been donated
to Community Hospital of Long Beach who in turn set
up "Eileen's Fund" which accepts these donations and
disperses them when necessary. To date
approximately $3500 has been raised. "To
Hennessy" wrote about Eileen in the Press-Telegram
which helped to generate some additional donations.
Eileen is very low key about all of this and really
doesn't think that she has done anything special,
but those who know her think very differently.
