Rainbow Fountain:
CYCLONE RACER
|
| "By far, the largest
structures on The Pike's Silver Spray Pier were the roller
coasters." |
|
Much like the development of aircraft and the
automobile in the early 20th century, the amusement devices created
for The Pike were marvels of engineering, designed and built by
visionaries pushing the limits of technology.
The Jackrabbit coaster opened in 1915 and replaced a smaller coaster.
In 1930, it was replaced by the "Greatest Ride in The World," the
Cyclone Racer. "One of my cousins was a roller coaster fanatic like
I was. We would head for the Pike in the cool of the evening. The
first stop was the great wooden roller coaster - The Cyclone - and we
would ride 5 times in a row, a terrifying thrill!"
-- Long Beach Coaster Fanatic, 1997
On September 15th, 1968, Cyclone Racer took its last rider. It
was the last two-track roller coaster left in America. |
